The 5-Minute Monthly AC Filter Clean That Saves You Thousands
Of all the maintenance tasks that affect your AC bill, this is the cheapest, fastest, and most ignored. You do not need a technician. You do not need tools. You need five minutes once a month and a tap with cold water.
Why filters get dirty fast in Pakistan: airborne dust from construction sites, unpaved roads, and seasonal winds settles inside your home faster than in cooler climates. A filter that would last six months in Europe is choked in Pakistan within four to six weeks.
Step by step: switch off the AC at the wall socket — never just the remote. Open the front grille of the indoor unit; on most splits it lifts upward and clicks. Slide out the two mesh filters. Hold them under cool running water with the dust side facing the tap, so water pushes the dust out, not deeper in. Air-dry on a clean cloth for at least 30 minutes — never reinstall them wet. Slide them back, close the grille, switch the AC back on.
When to actually replace, not just clean: if the mesh is torn, if the colour has gone permanently grey-brown after washing, or after roughly two years of use. Replacement filters for most brands cost Rs. 800–1,500.
What you should never do: do not put the filter in a dishwasher; do not use hot water (it warps the plastic frame); do not scrub with a brush (it tears the mesh); and do not use detergent unless it is the gentle dish-soap variety, well rinsed.
